Project Description

Thamel Shopkeeper – Kathmandu, Nepal

A Thamel shopkeeper watches a steady stream of foreigners pass by in the heart of Kathmandu. Thamel is the center of tourism in Kathmandu, complete with a dizzying assortment of shops, restaurants, guest houses, and trekking agencies. In 1988, at the time of this photo, Thamel had just received electricity in the form of a single wire with a few bare bulbs hanging above the narrow streets. In 2011, to the delight of tourists, Thamel was declared a full Wifi zone. The transformation of Nepal from a once secluded Kingdom to a constitutional democracy complete with modern technology, has been metoric.
