Project Description
Sinbad Sunset – San Rafael Swell, Utah
Awash in a golden glow, the setting sun flames between storm clouds and the rugged landscape of Sinbad Country. The area is in a remote region of Utah’s San Rafael Swell, a 2000 square mile uplift strewn with a maze of canyons and high desert. The Swell, as it’s locally known, was recommended for National Park designation even before its famous neighbors, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. But due to mining interests in the area, it never received federal protection. Today, the San Rafael Swell has a scattering of Wilderness Study Areas (WSA), an administrative status given by the BLM which oversees the area. Competing interests in the area, between extraction industries, ranching, and recreation make the future of the Swell uncertain.
