Project Description
Sandstone Keyhole – Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Oblivious to a frosty dusting of snow, an indomitable boulder sits heavy and silent just beyond the sanctuary of a sandstone keyhole. This keyhole arch is one of many clefts and crevices carved by weather and time through Cedar Mesa Sandstone in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. The park is a geologic layer cake, sliced and exposed by the Colorado and Green rivers. Visitors to Canyonlands can walk through time as they descend through more than 300 million years of earth’s history. The creation of Canyonlands National Park in 1964 was the conclusion of fours years struggle between commercial and preservation interests. Today, nearly 400,000 visitors a year bring a steady stream of revenue into the region.
