Project Description

Sandstone Cathedral – Parunuweap Canyon, Utah

A thin stream of sunlight threads the serpentine passages of Mineral Gulch. Eons of erosion from a trickling, turbid stream have carved this narrow defile through Navajo Sandstone. The violent, muddy torrents of occasional floods gouge the deeply scalloped and sinuous curves into the slot canyon walls. Mineral Gulch is a small tributary of Parunuweap Canyon and the East Fork Virgin River in southwest Utah. Most of the canyon, including Mineral Gulch, lies outside of neighboring Zion National Park. A section of the canyon is included within a 30,800 acre Wilderness Study Area that awaits protection from Congress.
