Project Description
Rosette Nebula – Astrophoto
A burning crimson flower, the Rosette nebula shines like a cosmic rose in the night sky. The symmetrical petals of the rose are sculpted by stellar winds from the hot, young central stars. The glowing cloud of gas and dust is actually a stellar nursery that gave birth to these young stars just a few million years ago. Though the Rosette nebula is about 5000 light years from Earth, it is 50 light years in diameter, making it almost 3 times the size of the full moon in our sky. While the central, bright stars can sometimes be seen with the unaided eye, the dramatic color and structure of the nebula requires a telescope and camera to become visible.
