Project Description

Reds Canyon Dawn – San Rafael Swell, Utah

Towering walls of Wingate Sandstone flood with color as dawn rises over the San Rafael Swell. This magical area in eastern Utah is a part of the simmering conflict between different land use agendas. Competing interests such a mining, cattle ranching, ATVs, biking and hiking, all lay claim to this relatively unknown treasure. Sections of the San Rafael Swell were recommended for national park designation even before its famous neighbors, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Of the Swell’s 1.8 million acres, only small fragments are recommended for Wilderness designation and none of it is protected for future generations.
