Quilted Autumn – San Juan Mountains, Colorado
An autumn quilt of oaks and aspens blankets a colorful hillside on the northern slopes of the San Juan Mountains. The San Juan Mountains are the largest mountain range in Colorado and contains thirteen of the state’s 54 fourteen thousand foot peaks. Because of both their size and vertical relief, the San Juans include a diverse range of ecosystems, from shrublands to alpine tundra. This mixed forest of Gambel oaks and quaking aspens lies at the transition between the arid sagebrush lands of some lower valleys and the montane forests high on the mountain sides.
