Project Description

Pleiades Angel – Astrophoto

Wisps of glowing star dust spread like angel wings amidst the hot blue stars of the Pleiades. Also known as the Seven Sisters, the Pleiades derive their name from the ancient Greek word pleo, meaning to sail. They were used in ancient marine navigation because of their prominence during the Northern Hemisphere winter. The distinctive star cluster lies at a distance of about 400 light years and encompasses more than 1000 stars. On a clear, dark night, an observer with keen vision may be able to see as many as 14 of the brightest stars.
