Orion Nebula – Astrophoto
A glowing interstellar cloud, the complex structure of the Orion Nebula displays a kaleidoscope of color. From burning, hydrogen-alpha reds to reflected blues and violets emanating from nearby blue giant stars, the nebula radiates a wide spectral range. This indicates a complex strewn with heavier elements. The nebula is an example of a stellar nursery, whereby gravitational collapse of the interstellar cloud forms clumps hot enough to begin the nuclear fusion of a star. The young stars, in turn, emit a stellar wind and shock wave that sculpts the nebula into its dramatic shape.
