Project Description

Luminous Passage – Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Utah

Carved through the strata of time, the narrow passage of Buckskin Gulch beckons with the luminous glow of sunlight. One of the longest slot canyons in the world, Buckskin Gulch averages less than 20 feet wide for more than 13 miles. The convoluted sandstone walls close in so much at times so that you cannot see the sky. With only one sketchy escape near the middle of the canyon and the constant possibility of flash floods, Buckskin is a committed and dangerous hike. The slot canyon is a tributary of the larger Paria Canyon, most of which is protected within the boundaries of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. Designated by Congress in 1984, the 110,732 acre wilderness straddles the borders of Utah and Arizona.
