Project Description
Canyon Of Contrast – Paria Canyon Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, Utah
A boxelder, within the narrow confines of Buckskin Gulch, clings to a thin sanctuary of sand between soaring Navajo sandstone walls and the high water mark of past floods. The narrow canyon is largely within the 112,500 acre Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness created by Congress in 1984. It is one of the longest slot canyons in the world, averaging less than 20 feet wide for more than 13 miles. With the ever looming possibility of flash floods, Buckskin Gulch is also one of the most committing and dangerous slot canyon hikes. Even so, the canyon’s popularity has sky rocketed in recent years, prompting a limited permit system for overnight stays.
