Project Description

Andromeda Setting – Colorado

A setting spiral of light, the Andromeda galaxy dips below the rocky horizon of Colorado’s Lumpy Ridge. At 2.5 million light years away and containing an estimated 1 trillion stars, Andromeda is our nearest, large galactic neighbor. Though larger and more populous than our Milky Way, Andromeda shares a similar spiral structure and likely resembles our galaxy as seen from a great distance. This actual perspective of Andromeda galaxy as it sinks below the horizon was captured through a refracting telescope near Estes Park, Colorado. For details on how this image was made, look for an upcoming article on combining terrestrial and astro photography.
