Project Description

Andromeda Rising – Astrophoto

A primordial spiral of light, Andromeda (M31) appears to be to be rising into a dark autumn sky. Our nearest large galactic neighbor, Andromeda lies some 2.5 million light years distant and contains an estimated 1 trillion stars. Because of the immense distance, the galaxy appears as a luminous cloud with dust veins, which help to define the spiral arms. Two dwarf galaxies (M32 and M110) are also prominent in the image. All the individual points of light in the image are nearby stars in our own galaxy. Andromeda, though somewhat larger than the Milky Way, shares a similar shape and structure and is likely how we appear to them.
