Project Description

Heart of the Winds – Wind River Range, Wyoming

The rugged heart of the Wind River Range rises crimson above a pastoral pond and wildflower meadow. The “Winds”, as they are locally known, are one of the most dominate ranges in the Rocky Mountains. This hundred mile long stretch of granite harbors more than forty peaks above 13,000 feet and contains the largest concentration of glaciers in the lower forty eight. It was precisely this glaciation, beginning about 500,000 years ago, that carved the dramatic peaks we see today. Due to their relatively remote location in sparsely populated Wyoming, the Winds receive far fewer visitors than their famous neighbors, the Tetons to the north.
