Sea Stack Pastels – Reynisfjara, Iceland
A pastel sky is punctuated by the slender forms of basalt sea stacks along the southern coast of Iceland. Rich with legend and lore, many of Iceland’s natural wonders have supernatural explanations. The sea stacks of Reynisfjara are said to have formed when two trolls attempted to pull a ship to shore, but turned to stone at sunrise. A less colorful explanation is that basalt formations stretching into the sea eroded from the forces of wind and water until only narrow columns remained. Either way, the sea stacks ornamenting southern Iceland are hauntingly beautiful.
