Project Description

Sass Maor – Dolomites, Italy

Sass Maor rises from a thin veil of mist to bask in the early morning sun. At 9239 feet (2816m), the vertical pillar of stone is a beacon for climbers. Sass Maor, as many of the rugged peaks in the Dolomites of northern Italy, has fixed steel cables fastened to its sheer walls. The climbing routes, known locally as Via Ferrata (By Way of Iron), allow access to dizzying summits even for less experienced climbers. The peak is part of Parco Naturale Pale Di San Martino, a 197 square kilometer (76 square mile) preserve that was the first nature park of its kind in Italy.
