Velata Pala di San Martino – Dolomites, Italy
The veiled Blade of Saint Martino rises through parting clouds above the northern Italian village of San Martino. At 9783 feet (2982 meters), the dizzying peak soars nearly a vertical mile above the valley floor. The surrounding Pale Di San Martino, the “Blades of Saint Martino,” are dizzying spires of crystalline rock that inspired the creation of Parco Naturale Pale Di San Martino. The diminutive 76 square mile (197 square kilometer) park more than makes up for its small size with grand scenery. The park was created in 1967 and was the first nature park of its kind in Italy.
