Project Description

Patriarch Of Pines – Boulder Open Space And Mountain Parks, Colorado

Like a sprawling patriarch among a forest of slender lodge pole pines, a mature Ponderosa stands sentinel in the morning mist. Reaching heights of 160 feet, the Ponderosa is the largest of five dominant pine species in Colorado. Thick bark, self pruning lower branches, and an open crown make Ponderosas very fire resistant. The trees grow well in the rocky, nutrient poor soil of the Colorado Foothills, making them one of the most common conifers at elevations between 6000 and 9000 feet. For the passing hiker, Ponderosas offer a delightful surprise; the scaly bark of mature trees smells sweet and distinctly like butterscotch.
