Project Description

Maroon Bells Autumn Snow – Elk Mountains, Colorado

A fresh mantel of snow clings to the steep, striated slopes of the Maroon Bells.  North Maroon Peak, in the center, and more distant Maroon Peak reach skyward at a dizzying 14,014-feet and 14,156-feet respectively.  Among a group of six “fourteeners”, the Bells form the centerpiece of the Elk Range.  Much of the range is preserved within the 181,447-acre Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, establish in 1964 with the original Wilderness Act. The area now receives more than 100,000 visitors annually, including hikers, campers, hunters, equestrians, and many photographers.
