Project Description
Ascendant Aspens – White River National Forest, Colorado
Reaching for the sky, a congregation of aspens ascends through the vertical scaffolding of an autumn forest. The chalk white trunks of Quaking Aspens get their birch like appearance from a white powder they produce to provide ultraviolet protection for the green, photosynthetic bark. Native Americans, in times past, used the white powder as sunscreen. A fast growing soft wood tree, aspens have limited commercial value, yet are threatened by gas exploration in roadless areas of the White River National Forest. In the fall, large swaths of aspens adorn the mountainsides of Colorado with autumn gold.
