Project Description

Emerging Dawn – Maroon Bells, Colorado

Emerging from a predawn storm, the Maroon Bells shine with a fresh dusting of winter. Named for their brittle, red sedimentary rock, the striated peaks are accentuated by the fresh snow. They are among a cluster of six rugged fourteeners within the 181,138-acre Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The wilderness was established by the original Wilderness Act of 1964. The popularity of the Maroon Bells has prompted the US Forest Service to provide a free shuttle service to reduce traffic congestion during the warmer months. Maroon Lake, pictured in the foreground, is the spectacular destination for most day visitors.
